Looking good in Poznan: Preparation for the Canoe Sprint World Championships

ICF Secretary General, Simon Toulson, Sport Events Manager and the Canoe Sprint Technical Committee set off to Poznan, Poland last week to meet with the Host Organising Committee of one of the biggest events of the year, the 2010 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships.

During the meeting, broadcasting, general promotion of the event, athlete services and communications were just some of the topics covered.

Overall the venue is perfectly ready to host what will be a massive event on the canoeing calendar. Already used as a venue for international rowing, dragon boat and canoe as well as other watersport events, Poznan’s Malta Venue has all the spectator stands, pontoons and infrastructure already in place.

The meeting proved the perfect opportunity to open the communication channels between the ICF and the HOC and highlight how the new Event procedure, which is being developed at the ICF Headquarters, places such importance on Collaboration and Communication.

Broadcasting is high on the ICF’s agenda this year and the 2010 Canoe Sprint World Championships will not disappoint. With a contract of 2.5 hours of live coverage on each day of the semi-finals and finals (from Friday to Sunday), the ICF and HOC discussed the importance on working together to clarify the programme of events well in advance. With a viewership of 61 million at last year’s World Championships, the HOC in Poland will need to ensure the broadcast again caters for the European market.

Simon Toulson concluded “Poznan has extensive experience in organising canoeing events and the 2010 World Championships will be an exciting event. The knowledge and experience of the staff here is next to none and I am confident of a great event this year.”
