Renovations are well advanced at the historic Augsburg canoe slalom venue in Germany, ahead of the staging of the 2022 ICF world championships.
The championships will be a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Eiskanal hosting canoe slalom during the 1972 Munich Olympics – an historic day for our sport as it made its Olympic debut. Next year's world championships will also include the extreme canoe slalom world titles, the first time the event will have been held in Augsburg.
The venue has hosted three ICF canoe slalom world championships and two European championships, and is a regular on the world cup circuit. The first international competition at the venue took place in 1953.
In 2019 Augsburg was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site, in recognition of its water management system that dates back more than 800 years, and of which the Eiskanal is an important component.
As well as the race venue itself, the renovations include modernisation of the restaurant, the boathouses and the outdoor facilities. The concrete renovation of the lower section of the sewer has been completed, and work on the gate hangers, outdoor facilities and buildings is progressing well.
National and regional squads are back training at the venue.
The 2022 ICF canoe slalom and extreme canoe slalom world championships will be held from July 26 to 31.
