ECA Press Release: The Paracanoeing part of the 2016 ECA European Canoe Sprint and Paracanoeing Championships ended today in Moscow with the remaining six finals. Edina Mueller (GER) continued her successful performances in the Paralympic season winning both at World Championships in May and now at the European Championships in Moscow.

German kayaker Edina Mueller paddled really fast in women’s KL1 200m final. She was almost two seconds faster than her closest rival Alexandra Dupik from Russia, and Kamila Kubas from Poland picked up a bronze medal.

Mueller commented on her amazing season, winning the gold medal at World Championships in Duisburg, “The season started really well at the world championships, which was a great feeling, because I fell into the water one hour before the race. At the start line I didn't think I could do it. It is just a good feeling I still did it, that I could still have a good race.”

Although she had a good lead in today’s final in Moscow, she pushed hard towards the finish line, “I really like this regatta course in Moscow. It was a very fast race. I'm just really happy that it went well here and to have a good race. I tried to give everything, it was important for me to know what I can do. The other girls were fast too. It was a really good race. This was the last big international competition for us, the next is Rio. It was a great practice.”

Markus Mendy Swoboda (AUT) won the men’s KL2 200m final with two and a half seconds lead ahead of Federico Mancarella (ITA) and Dejan Fabčič (SLO) was another second slower than Italian paddler.

“The conditions were good. Competition gets tougher. It was pretty hot and the traffic in Moscow is really bad so I had to stay all day at the course so I wouldn’t come here late. You get tired, because its warm all the time, you sit by the course and wait for the start. The race was OK, good conditions, fast times, hard competition. Three years ago there were always the same three [athletes] on the podium, but now you see new faces every time,” said Swoboda.

Local favourite Lenoid Krylov (RUS) picked up gold medal in men’s KL3 200m ahead of Tom Kierey and Martin Farineaux (FRA).  Robert Suba (HUN), Remy Boulle (FRA) and Andrei Tkachuk (BLR) were the best in men’s KL1 200m final. Nadezda Andreeva (RUS) crossed the finish line in KL2W 200m final ahead of her compatriot Rimma Egorkina and Pascale Bercovitch (ISR), while Larisa Volik (RUS) won the race ahead of Maria Calvo (ESP) in VL3W 200m.
