The International Olympic Committee has confirmed the C1-200 canoe sprint silver medalist from the 2012 London Games, Lithuania’s Jevgenij Shuklin, has been disqualified after re-analysis of his sample taken at the time.

33-year-old Shuklin returned a positive test for the prohibited substance oral turinabol and he will be ordered to return the silver medal. The positive was discovered during the IOC's re-testing of samples taken from the 2012 Olympics.

Russia’s Ivan Shtyl will be promoted to the silver medal position, and Spain’s Alfonso Benavidez Lopes de Ayala will be elevated to the bronze position.

“It is incredibly disappointing to have an athlete in our sport test positive,” ICF secretary general Simon Toulson said.

“But it is also good to know that someone who tried to cheat, has been caught. We will continue the fight to rid canoeing of athletes who break the rules to gain an advantage.”
