Paracanoe athletes will be front and centre when the 2024 Paralympic Games reaches its exciting finale in Paris next year, with five gold medals on offer on a thrilling last day of action.

Paralympic organisers have released the schedule for the 10-day event, with paracanoe one of the crowning events on the final day of competition. The scheduling reflects the excitement and anticipation which paracanoe has added to the Paralympic programme since its introduction in Rio in 2016.

Paralympic organisers have also announced the final day of competition will showcase women’s events. Paracanoe will be at the forefront with three of the five gold medal events on offer set for women’s racing.

“As with any sporting event scheduling is incredibly important, and we are thrilled our competition will be held over the final weekend of next year’s Paralympic Games,” ICF Paracanoe Committee chair, John Edwards, said.

“We are also honoured to be part of what promises to be a thrilling final day, when women athletes will very much be the centre of attention. To have three of the five paracanoe gold medal events on the Sunday designated to female paddlers is a great vote of confidence in our sport.

“Since first joining the Paralympics in 2016 the growth of paracanoe has been phenomenal. We will have a new event in Paris, new athletes and new countries. And all showcased during prime time, when families and fans will get the chance to spend their weekend either watching at the venue or around the world.”

The five paracanoe medals on offer on Sunday, September 8, will be women’s KL1, KL2 and KL3, while the men will battle for gold in VL2 and VL3.

The women’s VL3, a new addition to the Paralympic programme, will be the last of five gold medals decided on the Saturday, September 7, when there will be three gold medal events for men and two for women.

The men’s KL1, KL2 and KL3 will all be run and won, while the women will contest the VL2 and VL3.

The men’s VL3, the final paracanoe gold medal to be decided in Paris, looks set to bring the Games to a thrilling climax. Australia’s Curtis McGrath, already the most successful paracanoe athlete at the Paralympics with three gold medals, could be lining up for a fifth Games medal.

On Saturday he will be aiming to win a third successive KL2 gold medal.
