Canoe-Kayak National Championships held in Pakistan to Commemorate World Environment Day
Canoeing in Pakistan is still well and alive! The 2011 World Environment Day Canoeing Kayak Championships was held at the Hayat Durrani Water Sports Academy in Quetta, Pakistan on 5th June to coincide with World Environment Day.
The competition, which was organised as per the International Canoe Federation (ICF) rules and regulations, was under the patronage of the Pakistan Canoe and Kayak Federation (PCKF) and was organised by the Balochistan Canoeing and kayaking Association.
In this event, Pakistan Customs took 1st Place followed by Balochistan 2nd Place and Islamabad 3rd Place. The Secretary General of PCKF, Hayatullah Khan Durrani said after the event, “We have very good canoe kayak paddlers because we have a project for youth canoeists. Pakistan Canoe and Kayak Federation provides training facilities for its grassroots programme, therefore the juniors kayak paddlers of HDWSA Balochistan are the best in Pakistan.”
The participation of girls in the Championships was also highly commended; it was pointed out that the Federation has many female members and they have taken a keen interest in kayaking sports. Mr. Durrani said, “The position of the Federation now is to make available its best facilities to the girls so that they can be coached properly.” The sport is evidently proving popular because the girls have a good level of kayaking skills and it is deemed to be a suitable and attractive sport for girls in Pakistan.
Following the successful National Championships, Mr. Durrani met with Balochistan’s Minister of Sports Mr. Shahnawaz Khan Mari in his office to discuss the promotion and the development of Canoeing and Kayaking in Pakistan. He also took this opportunity to inform the minister about the the ICF’s assistance in connection with the development of Canoe and Kayak sports in Pakistan, especially the donation of K1 and K2 boats for PCKF paddlers. It was also deliberated that the President of the Iran Canoe Federation and the Asian Canoe Confederation would in the near future confirm Pakistan’s team participation in the upcoming Asian Championships in Tehran.
