Luka Bozic had the next few weeks of his life carefully planned out.
Head to the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in London, hopefully become world champion and qualify an Olympic quota for Slovenia, head home for the birth of his first child, and then head to Paris for the final canoe slalom world cup of the season.
Two of those events were easy to lock in. The third? Well, some things don’t work to a schedule…
“My girlfriend called me at 3 in the morning on Saturday, I checked flights and at six I was on the plane back home, and at midnight I was back here to prepare for the worlds,” Bozic said.
“It was a really nice at the moment. I didn’t expect so much, but then when you are there, when you see the new baby, this is really a nice moment. We are so happy.
“From now on I think my son is more important than other activities and sport. I’m so happy they are both healthy.”
Bozic could be forgiven if he seems a bit distracted this week, but he is trying to remain focused on winning his first ICF C1 world title.
“I need to prepare for Friday’s semi-finals, I’m expecting a lot, so I will do my best and we will see,” he said.
“I have a lot of work in front of me, so step-by-step.”
Despite the distractions Bozic was able to qualify on Wednesday for Friday’s C1 semi-finals.
