Duisburg 2016 - Information for visitors

Duisburg

The city of sport Duisburg, which is situated where the Ruhr joins the Rhine, is an exceptionally diverse city! It is still one of the most important industrial centres, holding the largest steelworks in Europe. It used to have the world's largest inland port, but has now also developed into one of the leading logistical centres in Europe. The continual acquisition of new branches seals its function as a worldwide location and provider of services. The city with its 500,000 inhabitants presents itself as a modern metropolis these days, which distinguishes itself through cultural diversity and a large and varied offer of leisure activities. But most important of all: Duisburg is a city of sport.

Duisburg has a number of beautiful locations for leisure and sport activities, like the Toeppersee in the west, the Revierpark Mattlerbusch in the north and the 300 ha-large Sechs-Seen-Platte in the south of Duisburg, which is a paradise for sailing, canoeing, fishing, horse-riding, swimming, running and Nordic walking.

The heart of sporting facilities, however, is the sportpark Wedau, next door. Here, 20 sport clubs and associations have their base. The MSV-Arena, home to the football team MSV Duisburg and the Scania-Arena of the German Ice-hockey League team Eishockey-Füchse are also situated here. The ladies' football team FCR Duisburg 2001, who is also in the premier league.

The waterski-site in the sportpark Wedau is popular with both professional and leisure-time athletes. It is no surprise, that the 500 sport clubs count a total of over 100,000 members, as the conditions are ideal. For the same reasons Duisburg is also a popular location for international sport events.

Duisburg loves to be a good host. The athletes and their fans are very welcome here.
