Sustainability is at the heart of the second stop of the 2025 International Canoe Federation Canoe Slalom World Cup Series in Pau, France.

The Host Organising Committee won the gold certification of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee sustainability initiative, titled "Sustainable Development, Sport is Committed".

This is the second time the Pau Canoe Evénements received the honour, having already claimed the top spot in 2022 and silver in 2021.

Out of 258 labelled events, only six have obtained the gold standard, with two of them going to Pau.

“The environment is an integral part of canoeing and kayaking. Pau Canoe Evénements has been committed to sustainable development since its creation, making it a core part of its identity through a wide range of actions organised throughout the year,” Sylvain Puy, General Coordinator of Pau Canoe Evénements, said.

Procuring food from local vendors, providing bicycles for athletes and volunteers, reusing old media and on-site signage are some of the methods followed inside the Pau-Pyrenees Whitewater Stadium to protect the environment.

Joining hands with local associations to clean rivers, plant trees and organise nature workshops are among the other initiatives carried out by Pau Canoe Evénements.

“You will not find a single event organised by Pau Canoe Evénements without a strong focus on sustainable development,” Puy added.

“In 2025, the ambition to achieve the gold label was a major challenge, and it was met. Now, the goal is to sustain that level of commitment throughout the competition.

“It is worth noting that among more than 500 label applications, only 258 events were successfully certified, and only six of them received the gold label. Two of those were the ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup in Pau in 2022 and 2025.

“Receiving this label reflects our ongoing dedication to maintaining sustainable and eco-responsible events.”

Despite the recognition, the organisers have vowed to keep improving over the years.

The network of volunteers at the venue ensures that no eye will be turned when it comes to waste management.

Athletes have also been appointed as ambassadors to promote the green initiative through social media.

“In 2023, we organised the International Youth Games, an event that has nothing to do with Canoe Slalom and we obtained the silver label,” Puy said.

“This label is not only a reward but also a justification for all stakeholders who might be reluctant to change. It is a deep, collective and long-term work.”
