International Canoe Federation President Thomas Konietzko has reiterated the need for environmentally-friendly sporting events at the ongoing 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Mr Konietzko attended COP29, where he met with Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

They discussed a range of topics, including paddling, with Mr Aliyev open to the idea of a sustainable Canoe Slalom venue in the Land of Fire and more white water activities in the country.

The meeting was also attended by World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland and International Dragon Boat Federation President Claudio Schermi.

“As the global governing body for all paddling sports, the ICF takes its responsibility to heart. With 71% of the Earth’s surface covered by water, we recognise that this vast blue playground is also a delicate ecosystem,” Mr Konietzko said.

“Our mission goes beyond sports; we are deeply invested in preserving these waters for future generations, ensuring they remain clean and vibrant for all to enjoy.

“In 2018, we launched our sustainability program in Augsburg, Germany, marking a significant milestone in our journey towards more responsible and eco-friendly practices.

“Since then, we have partnered with organisations like the IOC, UN Environment, and the European Union to lead impactful projects focused on sustainability and environmental protection.

“These initiatives are not just a part of our operations — they form the core of our Fit for Future strategy.

“Our commitment to delivering sustainable events is unwavering. From reducing waste and conserving water resources to educating our community on the importance of environmental stewardship, we are dedicated to making a positive impact.

“Together with athletes, officials, and supporters worldwide, we are setting a standard for responsible sports events."

The Azerbaijan Canoe and Rowing Federation organised a swim in the waters of Baku Boulevard under the motto "Row in clean water!" on the sidelines of COP29.

Mr Konietzko lauded Baku for organising a remarkable event that celebrates sports and the commitment to protect the environment.

“The event is a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility. As paddlers, we see firsthand the beauty of our rivers, lakes, and oceans, and we feel a duty to protect them," he continued.

“'Row in Clean Water!' is not just a slogan; it is a call to action for each one of us.

“Thank you to the Azerbaijan Canoe and Rowing Federation for organising this event and to everyone here who shares our commitment to clean water and environmental protection.

“Together, let’s paddle toward a more sustainable future.”
