Canoe Slalom New Zealand (CSNZ) is the National Sporting Organisation for the governance and delivery of Canoe Slalom in New Zealand, affiliated to the New Zealand and International Canoe Federations. As such, CSNZ is responsible for the development and delivery of high performance teams, up to and including the Olympic Games.

CSNZ has a growing reputation in international Canoe Slalom, with a women’s K1 medal in the Rio Olympic Games, and finalists in the World Championships from Junior to Senior levels. Such performances have earned CSNZ support from High Performance Sport New Zealand, alongside other NZ targeted sports. We are looking to capitalise on that growth and support, by appointing a coach to a new role to develop a positive, shared learning environment for our top 4 men’s K1 athletes, at targeted periods of the year, in collaboration with the athletes own home coaches.

The athletes have a strong desire to be part of a shared culture at periods of the year, to supplement their home programmes, and support their individual technical needs and models.

Purpose

The purpose of the role is to enhance the development of the 4 athletes, to raise individual and collective performance standards on the world stage.

Role Description

The right coach will therefore be positive, empowering, open and collaborative. They will have flexibility of technical model, appreciation of learning approaches, excellent communication skills, and professional aptitude. They will have a minimum of 10 years’ experience competing and/or coaching with success in international Canoe Slalom.

The coach’s role will total up to 20 weeks during the international season, including:

• Leading group training camps in Australia (February), New Zealand (March/April), and Europe (June/July/August);

• Supporting World Cup and World Championship competitions;

• Communicating and collaborating with athletes and their home coaches;

• Holding the group accountable for their shared environment.

Terms and Conditions

The coach will work alongside CSNZ High Performance Manager, Aaron Osborne, and other CSNZ contracted Performance Coaches including Shaun Pearce and Campbell Walsh. When in New Zealand, the coach will utilise the CSNZ National Training Centre at Vector Wero Whitewater Park in Auckland, and other suitable venues. Exact work periods and locations are subject to collaborative planning with the coach, athletes and home coaches.

Travel and camp expenses will be met fully by CSNZ. Remuneration is negotiable, subject to skills, experience and timetable. The initial contract would be for the 2018 season.

Application Process

Expressions of interest – including competitive and coaching Canoe Slalom resume, international experience, statement of coaching philosophy, two personal references, and availability to travel during 2018 – should be sent to CSNZ Interim Operations Manager, Graeme Maw (graemejmaw@gmail.com), by end of day in New Zealand on Sunday 21 January. The right candidate will be invited to trial with the group and colleagues during a training camp in Australia in February, and will be subject to reference and police checks prior to appointment.
