The South American Canoeing Confederation (CoSurCa) has decided to include SUP (Stand Up Paddle) races on the first South American Ocean Racing Championships, to be held at Ilhabela, Brazil.

The event will offer races in Surfski and SUP categories. CoSurCa also approved the SUP races inclusion on the South American Canoe Sprint Youth and Masters, set to happen in November 2017 in a location to be decided.

These decisions were taken during the recent CoSurCa Congress in Paipa, Colombia, with the presence of seven South American countries.

According to João Tomasini Schwertner, President of CoSurCa, the SUP official inclusion in South America’s events match what happens in the rest of the world, mostly in Europe SUP is regularly included in canoeing sports.

“It will be the debut of the modality which has been growing and getting space among the canoeing paddlers, and we see these decisions as a great opportunity to promote the canoeing on all over the world,” said Tomasini.

Paipa held the 2017 South American Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe Championships Junior, Senior and Masters involving 172 athletes from six countries. In this event Brazil became champion with Argentina in second and Colombia in third.
