International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach received the International Canoe Federation’s highest award and added his signature to special golden boats. 

ICF President Thomas Konietzko and Secretary General Richard Pettit had the pleasure of presenting Dr Bach with the ICF Order of Merit at the Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland during his final week as IOC President. 

The award was handed to Dr Bach in recognition of his outstanding leadership, unwavering commitment to the Olympic Movement, and exceptional support for the global development of paddle sports. 

Dr Bach was hailed by the ICF for his visionary guidance in inspiring unity, excellence and the advancement of sport worldwide. 

The ICF Order of Merit was awarded with the highest appreciation and respect by the ICF Board of Directors.

As well as receiving a certificate and medal, Dr Bach also signed the ICF’s special golden boats provided by ICF Gold Partner Nelo. 

It was the final name to be added to the boats which was signed by paddlers competing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. 

“It is an honour and privilege to receive this special award from my dear friend Thomas Konietzko, and to add my name among all the great athletes who signed these golden boats,” said Dr Bach.  

“During my time as IOC President, I was able to witness the growth of canoe sport across the world.  

“The ICF remains at the forefront of innovation, ensuring canoe sport is more urban, more inclusive and more sustainable, aligning perfectly with our Olympic Agenda reforms.” 

Dr Bach will end his 12-year term as IOC President on Olympic Day on June 23 when he will officially handed over to Kirsty Coventry. 

The former swimmer from Zimbabwe will become the first woman and first African to serve as IOC President when she begins her eight-year term following her historic election victory in March. 

Mr Konietzko heaped praise on Dr Bach who will take up the position of IOC Honorary President for Life after his departure as IOC President.

“Thanks to his outstanding commitment, he has had a transformative impact on sport, inspiring unity, pushing for gender equality and sustainability, and empowering athletes. 

“It is a great honour to present the ICF’s highest award, the ICF Order of Merit, to Dr Bach and I am delighted to see his signature added to our golden boats. 

 “These boats are a symbol of what was a golden Olympic Games for our sport in Paris last year and will always bring back wonderful memories.”
