Liu Xiaoqin is not fazed by pressure and wants to turn it into motivation as Dragon Boat makes its debut on the official sports programme at The World Games Chengdu 2025.
With an eye on the shorter distances, the Chinese coach said the team is ready to embrace the deep roots of the sport in their culture and deliver a performance that will be remembered by the home fans.
Up against Cambodia, Czechia, Spain, Hungary, Indonesia, Korea, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, and Ukraine, in six events in Chengdu, Xiaoqin is targetting to win two gold medals.
“Our goal is two gold medals. Among our team members are three Canoe Slalom athletes, whose explosive power will significantly enhance our chances in the short distance 200m and 500m events,” Xiaoqin said.
“Yes, there is certainly pressure, but I don’t see that as a bad thing. The expectations of our fans stem from a desire to see this traditional sport shine on the international stage and expand the global influence of Chinese culture.
“As the host nation where Dragon Boat has its origins, we aim to transform this pressure into motivation and deliver a gold-medal performance.”
Xiaoqin explained that the squad, relatively new, has been focusing on the basics en route to Chengdu, with techniques, tactical coordination, and race simulations.
Combining centralised training with small-group sessions, the coach identified Thailand and the Philippines as their main rivals.
“These are traditionally strong teams in Dragon Boat racing in the shorter distances with real medal potential,” Xiaoqin said.
“Our approach is to strategically take them lightly to maintain confidence and tactically treat them seriously to prepare thoroughly.”
At the Xinglong Lakeside Venue Center in Chengdu, China are not just thinking about medals.
As a traditional sport, there is a strong sense of responsibility among the athletes, not just to win but also to showcase the spirit of Dragon Boat to the world.
“We hope to achieve great results, but as hosts, we also consider this a valuable opportunity for international exchange. Competing in front of our home crowd provides a tremendous boost,” Xiaoqin added.
“We are also extremely proud that Dragon Boat is now an official event at The World Games.
“It not only signifies the successful global expansion of the sport and the attention it’s receiving from sports fans worldwide but also reflects the impact of Chinese culture.
“Dragon Boat, as a cultural symbol, continues to evolve with time, and we are ready to burst with new energy on the world stage.”
