Czechia have made a bold claim that they are not just a “European outsider” but a serious contender as Dragon Boat is set to debut on the official programme of The World Games Chengdu 2025.

With Canoe Sprint and Dragon Boat paddlers in the mix for the Czechs, crew member Kristyna Spalkova said that preparations have taken place individually and on a team level.

“Each athlete begins with individual training, then we come together for joint training and camps to fine-tune coordination and team dynamics,” she said.

“In Dragon Boat, individual strength isn’t enough – success depends on the synergy of the whole team.”

The Czechs are known for their success in Canoe Sprint with the likes of Josef Dostal and Martin Fuksa lighting up the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Paddlers from the country are also technically among the best in business, with the results speaking for themselves.

In Chengdu, Spalkova feels a lot of it depends on the helmsperson, who will be key in dictating the strategy during turning manoeuvres and overtaking.

“A single mistake can cost the entire race. Steering is technically demanding and can determine whether you win or lose,” she added.

“That’s part of what gives dragon boating its unique appeal, for both athletes and spectators.”

While they consider making it to Chengdu after battling hard to qualify at the 2024 International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championships a historic success, Spalkova and her teammates are also keen to make a mark in the city of pandas.

“Just qualifying for this prestigious event is a historic success. It’s a chance for our sport to show the world what we have to offer,” she added.

“It could also be a catalyst for further development of Dragon Boat both here and abroad, and more importantly, an opportunity to showcase its unique atmosphere to the broader public.”

Up against teams that have a long-standing tradition in Dragon Boat, the Czechs hope they can make the most of the 2000m race, having done well over the distance at the World Championships last year.

Hoping to build on those results, they have been working on the technique, but also on the team bonding.

“Dragon Boat is all about the team. Every crew member matters. Success hinges on coordination, rhythm, and perfect teamwork,” Spalkova concluded.
