Athletes will have more reasons for joy starting next season as the International Canoe Federation can confirm the inclusion of the OC1 as an official medal event in both the men’s and women’s categories at the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Cups.
The decision marks a significant step forward for the sport, increasing engagement, accelerating development across regions, and inspiring new generations to take on the ocean.
The addition of OC1 is expected to bring more athletes, nations, traditions, and sponsorship opportunities to the sport.
“The inclusion of OC1 has been long-awaited by our community, and it finally unites athletes from different paddling traditions under one global platform,” said Marian Sarbu, Chair of the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing Committee.
“It strengthens our events, enriches our sport, and accelerates our shared mission of developing Canoe Ocean Racing across every region of the world.”
The OC1 class, known for its deep cultural roots and technical skill demands, will bring a new dimension to Canoe Ocean Racing.
It allows nations with strong outrigger canoeing traditions to showcase their talent on the international stage while inspiring new generations to engage in the discipline.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of our entire team,” Sarbu added.
“Together, we have transformed an idea into reality and taken a historic step forward for Canoe Ocean Racing.”
Four ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Cups have been approved for 2026 already.
Kuantan, Pahang in Malaysia will stage the first one from July 3 to 5, followed by one in Tahiti from July 31 to August 2.
The third one will be hosted in Molokabra in Brazil from September 19 to 21, with fourth one to be held in Reunion from November 9 to 15.
