The opening ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup of the 2017 season will see Olympic and World Champions among the  hundreds of athletes from 27 countries converging on Montemor-o-Velho in Portugal this week.

The first world event after Rio 2016 has attracted star performers across all disciplines, and athletes from every corner of the globe.

The star-studded field includes Olympic champions Lisa Carrington (NZL), Sebastian Brendel (GER), and Krisztina Fazekas-Zur (HUN), Rio silver medallist Maxime Beaumont (FRA), World Champions Staniliya Stamenova (BUL) and Martin Fuksa (CZE), and local hero and 2012 Olympic silver medallist, Fernando Pimenta.

Montemor-o-Velho will also host the 2018 ICF Sprint Canoe World Championships, when more than 1000 athletes from more than 80 countries are expected to compete.

This year it will be the final test event, with a total of 66 regattas during 3 days competition. Teams will have time to warm up for the following weeks of competition in Europe and enjoy the sunny beach of Figueira da Foz and the top level conditions Portugal has to offer.
