The International Canoe Federation is pleased to confirm the Canoe Sprint and Canoe Slalom competition schedule to mark three years until the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028.
Slalom action will get underway on July 14 at the Whitewater Center in Oklahoma City and conclude on July 22.
Canoeing will be the second sport after triathlon to crown Olympic champions at LA28 on July 15.
Athletes who compete on July 14 will all participate in kayak cross a few days later, meaning no one will be eliminated on Day 0.
The return of kayak cross, the high-adrenaline event that made its Olympic debut at Paris 2024 and drew global attention, is set to thrill spectators again as nine days of block-buster Canoe Slalom action has been confirmed.
The world-class venue in Oklahoma City will host the 2026 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships and Congress, bringing further international exposure for the city ahead of the Games following their team's NBA title this year.
After a two-day break, the focus will turn to the spectacular Marine Stadium in Long Beach, which will kickstart the Canoe Sprint competition on July 25.
Canoeing’s strong presence in the Olympic Movement was reiterated when the International Olympic Committee confirmed 16 events on the programme for LA28 earlier this year.
This means there will be 10 medal events for Canoe Sprint again, with competition scheduled to conclude on July 29.
With six sets of medals in Canoe Slalom, paddle sports will have the sixth largest number of medal events of all 36 Olympic sports at the Games.
In total, 318 athlete quota places, including 236 for sprint and 82 for slalom, will be on offer for LA28, with gender equality also achieved once again.
“The Olympic Games are the pinnacle of our sport, and we are proud to confirm the schedule on a day that marks a significant milestone – three years until the Opening Ceremony of LA28,” ICF President Mr. Thomas Konietzko said.
“There will be 14 days of exhilarating races in Canoe Slalom and Canoe Sprint at these Games, including the much-anticipated return of kayak cross.
“In the Whitewater Center in Oklahoma City and the Marine Stadium in Long Beach, we have two of America's premium venues.
“Thanks to LA28, our partners, and the ICF family for all their hard work. We look forward to three more years of preparations to ensure our sport continues to grow globally.”
