The International Canoe Federation has set up a dedicated Working Group to contribute to the evolution of the Canoe Sprint programme at the Olympic Games Brisbane 2032.
Building on the momentum and the unprecedented success at Paris 2024, the International Olympic Committee confirmed 10 medal events for Canoe Sprint again at LA28, continuing the strong paddle sport presence at the Games.
However, supporting the continued global development of Canoe Sprint and driving participation across emerging regions after LA28 and beyond is a priority for ICF and the newly-established Working Group.
Comprising eleven experts from all five continents and chaired by ICF Canoe Sprint Committee Chair Toshi Furuya, the Working Group will analyse the current position of the Canoe Sprint discipline in the coming months and look for ways to attract the younger generation of paddlers.
A key area of emphasis will be the ICF’s commitment to targeted development programmes, with the Fit for Future Evolution strategy already redefining the activities with Excellence Centres, providing stronger pathways for athletes worldwide.
Supporting emerging National Federations with resources and assistance, the ICF hopes to tap into regions with high growth potential.

The Working Group will also address the challenge of complexity and cost in major events, including the Olympic Games, by streamlining competition formats.
Drawing on comprehensive data from Paris 2024, including audience figures and digital engagement, the Working Group will present concrete proposals for an updated sprint program.
These recommendations will be submitted to the ICF Board, setting a course for a more dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable future for Canoe Sprint at the Olympic Games.
“The Working Group comprises people who live and breathe our sport, and I cannot wait for their recommendations at the end of the year,” ICF President Thomas Konietzko said.
“We do not want to rest on our laurels and are aware of the need to evolve constantly to stay ahead of the game.
“I am confident that the Working Group’s insights will help us build a strong future for Canoe Sprint that inspires athletes and fans across all continents.”
