Australia’s Benjamin Sainsbury captured his third successive gold at the International Canoe Federation Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Cup in Montreal.  

Following his success in Szeged and Brandenburg, Sainsbury wasted no time asserting his dominance on the men’s VL1 200m final. 

He got off the mark in spectacular fashion, charging down the course in 1:03.97.  

Home paddler Benjamin Brown captured silver in 1:19.44 as India’s Yash Kumar completed the podium in 1:31.91.

“I’m feeling good. It was a solid day out there. We tried different things, including different paddles and setups after Brandenburg, and I think we are moving in the right direction,” said Sainsbury.  

“I’m excited to see what I can do going into the world championships. 

“Winning both world cups this year gives me a lot of confidence heading into the next competition, the goal is to get back to that top step. 

“We’ve got a few weeks now. We’ll head back home, then return to Europe to train before the lead-up to the world championships. 

“I’m hoping for a strong performance there.” 

In the men’s KL2 200m, Australia’s Scott Martlew topped his semi-final group in 45.07.

Argentina’s Emilio Atamanuk and Hungary’s Tibor Kiss also reached the final in impressive time.  

It was Portugal’s Norberto Mourao who topped the men’s VL2 200m semi-final in 59.02.   

Italy’s Marius Ciustea and Canada’s Mathieu St-Pierre also secured qualification to the final ahead of United states’ Yasir Shah who missed out.   

France’s Abel Aber secured the top spot of the semi-final in the men’s VL3 200m, with United States’ dual-athlete Declan Farmer missing out on a spot in the finals by under two seconds.  

There was further qualification success for Italy as Mirko Nicoli and Brazil’s Jean Benites secured the final spots to contest the medals.

Algeria’s Paralympic champion Brahim Guendouz topped his semifinal of the men’s KL3 200m in 43.30. 

Canada’s Gabriel Bouius and France’s Gabin Vallet also reached the final.

Brazil’s Aline Oliveira held off Great Britain’s Lindsay Thorpe to secure the fastest qualifying time in the women’s KL3 200m. 

Oliveira finished in 55.65, 0.22 seconds ahead of Thorpe.  

Germany’s Claudia Fisher captured the remaining final spot in 57.09.  

In the women’s KL2 200m, Spain’s Carlota Blanca topped the qualifying in 57.66.  

Israel’s Talia Eilat and India’s Prachi Yadav also secured qualification to the final.
