China stormed to nine gold medals from the 10 Olympic events at the Asian Canoe Sprint Championships in Hefei, establishing themselves as the dominant force on the continent.

With the championships marking the first Olympic Ranking event of the LA28 qualification cycle, the stakes could not have been higher – and hosts China's athletes rose to the occasion across all three days of competition.

Wang Nan was the standout performer of the women's Olympic events, claiming gold in both the women's kayak single 500m and the women's kayak four 500m.

In the individual event, Wang crossed the line in 1:55.140, more than two seconds clear of Uzbekistan's Ekaterina Shubina in silver and Kazakhstan's Stella Sukhanova in bronze.

She then returned to help power China's K4 crew alongside Yu Shimeng, Yin Mengdie, and Shen Siyu to a dominant team gold in 1:34.460, with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan completing the podium.

Wang Jinwei produced an equally impressive double gold, first combining with Li Chenhao to win the men's K2 500m in 1:31.240, edging Korea's Cho Gwanghee and Kim Hyobin by just 0.307 seconds.

He then anchored China's men's K4 500m crew alongside Liang Fengwei, Ding Shengkai, and Chen Weiyang, the quartet romping home in 1:23.285 ahead of the same Korean combination in silver and Japan in bronze.

Wang Jinwei's versatility across sprint disciplines makes him one to watch as the LA28 campaign builds.

China’s canoe athletes were every bit as dominant as their kayak counterparts. Wu Shengyue set the tone on the opening day, winning the men’s canoe single 1000m in 3:56.60, with Uzbekistan’s Mirjalol Kamilov taking silver and Chinese Taipei’s Lai Kuan-Chieh claiming bronze.

It was a controlled performance from Wu, who had more than five seconds in hand at the finish.

Lin Wenjun delivered one of the most clinical performances of the entire championships in the women’s C1 200m, crossing the line in 46.326 to edge out Uzbekistan’s Shokhsanam Sherzodova by just 0.203 seconds, with Indonesia’s Lali Herlin Aprilin taking bronze. The sprint finish made it one of the tightest and most dramatic races of the week.

China completed a clean sweep of the canoe team events on Saturday and Sunday. Xu Jian and Ji Bowen were imperious in the men’s canoe double 500m, winning in 1:41.891 ahead of Uzbekistan’s Guliev and Denisov in silver and Kazakhstan’s Yemelyanov and Khayotov in bronze. Sun Mengya then added another Olympic medal to her growing collection alongside Ma Yanan in the Women’s C2 500m, the Chinese pair winning in 1:58.802 with Uzbekistan in silver and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Huong and Diep Thi Huong claiming a fine bronze.

The one Olympic gold that eluded China came in the men's K1 1000m, where Uzbekistan's Shakhriyor Makhamov produced a powerful performance to win in 3:40.93. China's Yang Zhouyuxuan took silver and Japan's Mizuki Aoki bronze,

Uzbekistan otherwise played the role of closest challenger throughout, finishing on the Olympic podium in nine of the 10 events, while Kazakhstan's seven Olympic medals underlines the depth of competition across the region.

Beyond the Olympic programme, Kazakhstan made their mark in the non-Olympic events, with Stella Sukhanova winning the women's K1 1000m and Olga Shmelyova claiming gold in the women's K1 200m - two of the most eye-catching individual performances outside the ranking events.

China still led the non-Olympic medal table comfortably, but Vietnam's Nguyen Hong Thai provided the moment of the weekend by winning the women's C1 5000m — her country's only gold of the championships - in a commanding display of endurance over 5,000 metres.
