The new ICF Paracanoe season is almost upon us, and with several changes set to come into play this year, the Federation has scheduled a training course in Rome next month.

The course will look at the new para-va’a system, along with a research study on the para-va’a classification system. It will also provide an opportunity for Para Va’a athletes to undergo compulsory classifying before the international season starts in Szeged, Hungary.

The ICF Paracanoe committee is also hoping to recruit athletes for the research study, which will be run in collaboration with the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences on April 21/22.

The study will be conducted to examine the consistency of scoring between classifier teams in the new system.  During two days athletes will be classified by three classification teams.

The on-water test will only happen once. The classification will be conducted in the same manner as during the competition and consist of a leg, trunk and on-water test.

During these two days athletes will also be tested twice in a force measurement set-up, where force will be measured when they perform trunk flexion, knee extension and unilateral leg press during three seconds for each test.

Individual results of the force test will not be shared with the ICF.

The cost for accommodation, full board and transfer to and from the airport will be 150 EUR per day. All athletes that participate will be reimbursed 400 Euros to cover some of the accommodation expenses.

One coach per federation (five coaches in total, first come first serve basis) are also invited and will also be reimbursed 400 EUR. The study will take place at Castel Gandolfo, the Italian training facility.
