RIO DE JANEIRO - Hungary can extend its run of winning a gold medal in canoe sprint in each of the last seven Olympic Games when competition begins on Monday 15 August at Lagoa Stadium.

The last time Hungary failed to win gold medal was at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games when it did not participate.

The last time Hungary failed to win a gold medal in canoe sprint when it did participate was at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games. Hungary won three silver and five bronze medals.

Germany has the second-longest active gold medal streak in this sport, having won a gold medal at each of the last six Olympic Games.

At the London 2012 Olympic Games, Hungary and Germany both claimed a tournament-high three gold medals. No other NOC won more than one.

Hungary (22) and Germany (24) trail only Soviet Union (29) for most gold medals in canoe sprint.

The host NOC has won a gold medal in canoe sprint at the last two Olympic Games. Prior to Beijing 2008, the last host NOC to record a win was Soviet Union at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games.

No Brazilian athlete has won a medal in canoe sprint at the Olympics Games.
