Chamaune makes Olympic history for Mozambique

While most of the paddlers were celebrating the calm conditions on the opening day of the Olympic sprint program, Mozambique’s Mussa Chamaune would have been happy if the conditions had been a bit rougher for his historic first paddle in the C1 1000.

Not only was Chamaune making his Olympic debut, it was also the first appearance for Mozambique in canoe sprint.

The millpond conditions were a bit different to what Chamaune is used to.

“Mozambique is very hard, because we don’t train in lakes, we train in the sea,” he said.

RIO DE JANEIRO - The first heat of the women's K1 200m event will pit the London 2012 Olympic Games gold and bronze medallists against each other as the canoe sprint competition begins at the Lagoa Stadium on Monday.

Lisa CARRINGTON (NZL) and Natasa DOUCHEV-JANIC (HUN) will race for a place in the semifinals. CARRINGTON comes into the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as the No.1-ranked female paddler while DOUCHEV-JANIC is returning to the Olympic Games after spinal surgery in 2014.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Adam van KOEVERDEN (CAN) is one of the most experienced sprint paddlers to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Hungary can extend its run of winning a gold medal in canoe sprint in each of the last seven Olympic Games when competition begins on Monday 15 August at Lagoa Stadium.

The last time Hungary failed to win gold medal was at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games when it did not participate.

RIO DE JANEIRO - In a career that has now spanned five Olympic Games, Natasa DOUCHEV-JANIC (HUN) has made comebacks her speciality.

DOUCHEV-JANIC won two gold medals at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and a gold and two silvers at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
