Toshi Furuya has been a member of the ICF Canoe Sprint Committee since 2000 before his election as Chair at the ICF Congress in Rome in November 2021. 

During his career, Furuya has worked with many of Japan’s top canoeists, including Asian Games champions and Olympians and was the High Performance Director of the Japan Canoe Federation. 

Furuya has been Secretary General of the Japan Canoe Federation since 2017 and became an Executive Board member of the Japanese Olympic Committee in 2019. 

He held the role as the Canoe Sports Manager for Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe at Tokyo 2020 having been an International Technical Official at Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 as well as a Chief Official at several Asian Games.

Career in sports administration 

2000-2012 – Member of the ICF Canoe Sprint Committee 

2000-present – Chair of the Asian Canoe Confederation Canoe Sprint Committee 

2008-2012 – High Performance Director of the Japan Canoe Federation 

2016-2021 – Canoe Sport Manager of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics 

2017-present – Member of the ICF Canoe Sprint Committee 

2017-present – Secretary General of Japan Canoe Federation 

2019-present – Executive Board member of the Japanese Olympic Committee 

Sports practised 

Mr Furuya started his career as an athlete in 1982 before becoming the head coach of his prefectural canoe sprint team for the national sports festival and then a coach of a high school canoe club.
