ICF Canoe Freestyle Committee activities Q1 2026

The first quarter of 2026 has been a productive and forward-looking period for the ICF Canoe Freestyle Committee. Whilst this time of year traditionally features fewer competitions, significant progress has been made behind the scenes in areas including rule development, event planning, judging education, and regional competition support.
Rules and Technical Development
Following proposals submitted by the Committee, the ICF Board of Directors has approved a series of rule appendix updates. Most notably, five new moves have been added to the official scoresheet. These additions are expected to enhance the diversity, creativity, and overall excitement of freestyle performances at all levels of competition.
Further rule developments are currently under discussion, with additional updates anticipated later in 2026.

Event Planning and Delivery
World Cup – Krakow (Poland)
The scheduled World Cup event in Krakow has been rescheduled from June to September due to calendar conflicts. This event will mark the first ICF Canoe Freestyle competition held on this pumped course, representing an important step in exploring new venue formats. Planning is actively underway in collaboration with national organisers, and the Committee is optimistic that this will set a precedent for future events.
World Cup – Millau (France)
Preparations for the World Cup event in Millau this June are progressing well. Millau remains one of the premier freestyle venues, known for its high-quality feature and enthusiastic, knowledgeable spectators. The Committee continues to work closely with local organisers to ensure the event meets the highest standards and delivers an outstanding athlete and spectator experience.
Judging and Development Initiatives
The first ICF Judges Seminar of 2026 took place in Columbus, Georgia (USA) last weekend. This seminar aims to train and certify new judges, strengthening the officiating pool for future international events.
Columbus, recognised as the first ICF Canoe Freestyle Centre of Excellence, is a key partner in this initiative. The Committee is pleased to collaborate on developing judging standards and supporting athlete pathways through such strategic partnerships.
Regional Development and Competition
Paddle South Freestyle Tour (USA)
The Paddle South Freestyle Tour is currently underway, with events held across Nantahala, Montgomery, and concluding with two competitions in Columbus.
The tour continues to establish itself as a vital regional series, successfully bringing together emerging athletes and experienced competitors. The 2026 edition has featured a variety of high-quality whitewater venues across the southern United States, each offering distinct competitive challenges—from technical holes suited to aerial manoeuvres to longer wave features promoting fluid, dynamic rides.
These events play an important role in athlete development, competition readiness, and the overall growth of freestyle kayaking at the regional level.
Conclusion
The first quarter of 2026 has laid strong foundations for the remainder of the season. With key rule updates implemented, major international events in preparation, and continued investment in judging and regional development, the discipline is well positioned for continued growth and innovation.
The Committee looks forward to an exciting and progressive year ahead.
