Stunning setting for SUP

Stand Up Paddling had a busy period between September and December. The two most important races — World Cup and World Championships — were held during this period and the decisions made at the ICF Congress in November also had a major effect on the discipline.

Agios Nikolaos (Crete) organised the only SUP World Cup in 2024. The Greek island hosted an ICF World Cup for the second time after 2023. The picturesque backdrop of Crete's stunning coastline provided an ideal setting for the event, enhancing the experience for athletes and fans alike.

Competitors showcased remarkable skill and endurance, with thrilling races in all three events — sprint, technical, and long-distance — that highlighted the growing popularity of SUP.

Besides the official events, races were organised for young paddlers — who participated in large numbers — showing that there is also a strong demand for kids’ races.

Success in Sarasota

In November, Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, played host to a groundbreaking SUP World Championships, marking a historic milestone as the first such event held on the American continent.

This prestigious competition not only showcased the exceptional talent of paddlers from around the globe but also celebrated a significant leap towards gender equality in sports.

For the first time in history, the three-member-jury overseeing the event had women, emphasising the growing, recognition and empowerment of female leaders in the sporting world.

The highlight of the event was the sprint race, which was organised over 100m, using the automatic start system, proving a great success among athletes and spectators.

It’s important to note that despite facing significant challenges, including the impact of three hurricanes that hit the region before the event, the organisers did an exceptional job in coordinating and executing the event.

Their dedication and resilience helped ensure its success, even in the face of the damages caused by the hurricanes.

From Commission to Committee

Between the World Cup and the World Championships, ICF held its congress in Antalya, Turkey, a gathering that marked a significant milestone for the SUP Commission, which was officially elevated to Committee status after fulfilling all requirements.

During the Congress, I presented a comprehensive report detailing the achievements and progress made over the past few years, underlining the growing popularity and development of SUP as a competitive sport.

I was re-elected as SUP Committee Chair in the elections at the Congress, which also saw new members and advisors appointed, reflecting a commitment to fostering leadership and innovation within the sport.

This Congress not only celebrated the advancements in SUP but also set the stage for future growth and collaboration within the ICF framework.

Levelling the playing field

Another significant decision was made in Antalya by the National Federations — the introduction of a one-design category for junior races starting in 2025. This initiative is poised to enhance the sport's growth by levelling the playing field for young athletes, allowing them to compete under the same conditions without the influence of varying equipment specifications.

By focusing on skill, technique, and athleticism rather than the advantages of high-end gear, the one-design category will foster a more inclusive and accessible environment for juniors.

This shift not only promotes fair competition but also encourages greater participation and investment in grassroots development, ensuring that the next generation of paddlers can thrive and excel in stand-up paddling. As a result, the sport is likely to attract more young enthusiasts, which will further solidify its place in the global sporting landscape.
