ICF Canoe Marathon Committee activities Q1 2026

During the first quarter of 2026, the Canoe Marathon Committee has focused on strategic alignment, competition planning, and the continued development of marathon canoeing within the global framework of the International Canoe Federation.
Competition Calendar
Significant progress has been made in the planning and coordination of the 2026 competition calendar. Constructive collaboration with event organisers has ensured that preparations for the World Cup competition in Bazhong, China and World Championships in Gualeguaychu, Argentina are on track and will be aligned with ICF standards.
Madrid Meeting
The annual marathon meeting took place in Madrid, hosted by the Spanish Federation. There were many items on the agenda for this three-day in-person meeting, including the preparation of events, the rankings – in which athletes play a prominent role –, changes to the regulations, feedback from masters in the 10-year age groups (doubles), bids for the 2029 World Championships, the development of C-boats and the weight of the boats.
Boat Weight
With regard to boat weight, the Committee has continued its discussions with the Canoe Sprint Committee. The rationale was discussed with the Canoe Sprint Committee regarding a possible harmonisation of boat specifications in marathon and sprint canoeing. In doing so, the parametres for boat weight are being carefully examined, with the aim of improving the transition for athletes, reducing complexity and supporting the long-term development of the sport. The implications for athletes, manufacturers and organisers need to be assessed, and preparatory work is currently underway with a view to possible future proposals.
Masters Framework
The development of masters canoeing remains a priority. Steps have been taken to establish a more structured and sustainable framework for the World Masters Canoe Marathon Championships. At the same time, continuous efforts have been made to support the global growth of marathon canoeing, with encouraging progress observed in emerging regions, particularly in Asia. During the World Cup in Bazhong, a training camp will be organised to enable Asian paddlers to improve their skills.
Bazhong Preparations
At the end of January, the Chair of the Canoe Marathon Committee Ruud Heijselaar, together with the Canoe Marathon Chair for Asia Miki Bando, visited Bazhong, where we held discussions with the organisers. The enthusiasm with which Bazhong intends to organise the competition is admirable, and the legacy of the World Games is also evident here, as a number of World Games staff members are also involved in this World Cup.
In short, the first quarter of 2026 has laid a solid foundation for the coming year.
